A South Vancouver Island National Park Reserve

An idea whose time has come

By Dr. Keith Martin, P.C., M.P.

South Vancouver Island in British Columbia is an extraordinarily beautiful part of our planet. It is a place of ecologically sensitive areas, some of which contain rare flora and fauna. However, population pressures threaten these areas and one day will, through urban sprawl, obliterate these important ecosystems. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.

However, we now have a precious opportunity to preserve these lands. The solution: that the lands of Mary Hill, Race Rocks, and the undeveloped portions of William Head and Rocky Point be designated a National Conservation Area. This should be part of a larger canvas— a South Vancouver Island National Park Reserve—which would include parks in East Sooke, Albert Head, and Fort Rodd Hill connected to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail system and an expanded Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. This would also embrace the Upper Walbran Valley and sites around Port Renfrew that contain magnificent stands of old growth forests. These remarkable trees tower above all others and predate the birth of our county by centuries. (more…)

On World Water Day, Save Water to Save Life

March 22nd means it’s World Water Day again! Established by the U.N., World Water Day has been observed annually since 1993 as a way to raise awareness around protecting the world’s water resources.

According to WorldWaterDay.org, 27 percent of the urban population in the developing world doesn’t have access to piped water at home, and poor people in developing countries pay exponentially more for their water than people in North America.

But water shortages aren’t restricted to any one country or continent. As climate change continues to exacerbate environments around the world, recent droughts seen everywhere from the Amazon to the U.S. may become more frequent and more intense. If you haven’t started making every effort to conserve water, this World Water Day is the best time to start.

Here are some easy tips to start saving water at home, which will likewise lower your water bill. Submit your own tips to conserve water below, or tweet your idea with the hashtag #SaveWater and we’ll add it to the slideshow.

CLICK HERE to see how you can get involved with organizations that are helping to provide clean drinking water to those in need around the world.

Ten most endangered animals

Picking a Ten Most Endangered Animals list was a tough job. For every critically endangered creature you select, you must leave out hundreds of other animals that are in just as much jeopardy.

That’s why, we chose not to include the giant panda on our roster of the world’s ten most endangered animals. The panda, as appealing and important as it is, has gotten plenty of attention from conservationists and the public alike. Time to make room for another critically endangered animal or two that hasn’t had as much time in the spotlight of looming extinction.

Ten ways to help wildlife

Sure, it can get a little discouraging, hearing about all the ways in which humans are harming wildlife. And, sometimes we can feel like part of the problem, rather than the solution. However, each of us can play a role in helping wildlife. Below are our Top 10 ideas—almost everyone can do one or more of them—to help make the world a friendlier place for wild creatures. (more…)

Bringing Tigers Back From The Brink of Extinction

Protecting habitat by linking human and environmental security WILL save tigers

By Dr. Keith Martin, MP

By protecting tiger habitats and reducing demand for tiger parts, we can save these magnificent creatures from extinction.

It is hard to imagine a world without tigers. Yet today there are fewer than 3,200 of these magnificent predators left on the planet. In the past century, their populations have plummeted from 100,000 to only about 2,500 breeding adults.

This catastrophic decline in tiger populations is a direct result of two things: 1) habitat destruction, and 2) relentless hunting for their bones, claws, and teeth, which are used to make ornaments and products that claim—falsely—to have medicinal value. To save these species, rapid and effective action must be taken to protect their habitats and reduce demand for their body parts. (more…)

Help save rhinos from extinction – join our campaign

The appalling escalation in the poaching of rhino around the world is undermining conservation efforts to save these species, destroying people’s livelihoods, and is threatening to drive these species to extinction. More than 90 per cent of all rhino species have already been wiped out. We must act now before it’s too late.

A new era for forestry in Canada

The David Suzuki Foundation has joined an unprecedented coalition of forestry companies and environmental groups to unveil the landmark Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, one of the largest forest conservation agreements in history.

The Agreement covers an area of more than 70 million hectares of public lands — an area larger than the entire Province of Alberta — and when fully implemented will permanently protect vast areas of Canada’s treasured Boreal Forest, stretching from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador. Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs saves energy and money.

Taking better care of the environment may not have been on your list of resolutions for 2011, but when you see images of smog-filled cities or hear about devastated natural landscapes, you have to wonder about the type of world that will be left for future generations.

Move towards a greener lifestyle with these simple steps:

At home
